Coffee has a remarkable story in Rwanda. For most of its coffee-producing history, Rwanda sold beans at low prices to match the mediocre quality. Then the coffee industry virtually ground to a halt in the 1990s during the country’s politically tumultuous times.

As Rwanda began to rebuild and focus on moving forward, the heirloom Bourbon arabica trees introduced in the early 20th century took on a new significance. In need of a serious economic boost, Rwanda made use of these highly-prized varietals to enter the specialty coffee market, fetching premium prices for its coffee for the first time.
